A Brief Histroy of IPC Delhi State
The Indian Pentecostal Church of God is the largest autochthonous Pentecostal denomination in our nation. Headquartered in Kumbanadu, Kerala, the IPC has approximately eight thousand local churches spread across India and other parts of the globe including the Middle East and Africa, North America, Europe and Australia. Delhi and the National Capital Region also witnessed Pentecostal movements as early as 1937 when Pr M. K. Chacko came to North India as a missionary from Kerala.
The work of IPC in Delhi commenced with the formation of IPC Northern Region in 1969 under the leadership of Pr K. T. Thomas. The prime purpose of the formation of IPC Northern Region is the furtherance of the Gospel and planting of churches in North India. Over the next two and a half decades, the Lord enabled His servants to witness the expansion of various church ministries in North India under the aegis of IPC NR.
In October'93, the General Council of IPC NR's decision to bifurcate the jurisdiction of its expanded region in to five territorial units for better administrative control was approved by IPC General Council. Subsequently, IPC North Central Region (IPC NCR) consisting of churches in Delhi, UP, Haryana and Rajasthan were formed. Pr K. Joy, an alumnus of Hebron Bible School, who was taught by the pioneers of IPC, and was a part of IPC NR from 1969, was unanimously elected to lead IPC NCR as President. The ministry of IPC further developed with the planting of various churches in all the four states under the foray of IPC NCR, and Pr K. Joy’s leadership. In 2006, IPC NCR was further divided in to four different State councils, in response to the constitutional amendment of IPC General Council. Subsequently, IPC Delhi State formally came in to existence with Pr K. Joy appointed as President. The expansion of IPC Delhi State continued through the next decade with the ministry having 158 local churches (Hindi, Malayalam and English) and as many church ministers and evangelists serving the Lord in various capacities across the capital and its adjoining regions. More than 50% of our missionaries are based out of remote village areas of UP, Haryana and Delhi with the remaining in various parts of the metropolitan. By the grace of God, IPC NCR and Delhi State were instrumental in constructing 25 church buildings for the believers of Delhi, UP, Rajasthan and Haryana. God used Pastor K. Joy to take the major financial responsibility in all these projects. In North India, where we face a lot of difficulty to get a place on rent for conducting worship/prayer meetings, these church halls have really been a blessing to many believers.
The IPC Delhi Sate functions out of 6 districts namely East, West, Ghaziabad, South, Greater Delhi West, Greater Delhi East districts, and 2 mission areas Robertganj and Greater Noida. These consist of Hindi, English, Malayalam and bilingual services.
The extended arms of IPC Delhi State in the form Sunday School Association, Pentecostal Young People's Association, Sister's Association and Pastors' Welfare Board work as strong proponents to permeate the essence of the Pentecostal doctrines and also to educate, edify and empower its members to lead a spirit filled Christian life, to proclaim liberty to all, and to stand steadfast for the glory of the Lord. Various spiritual activities such as fasting prayers, outreach programs and evangelization movements, talent tests, worship nights, tarry meetings, sports meets, conventions, philanthropic endeavors, spiritual training camps, seminars etc. are conducted under the aegis of these bodies.
Peniel Bible Training Centre was started by IPC NCR in 1997 and is now under the governance of IPC DS, training Bible School graduates from Kerala and North India for evangelization in local languages and also in planting local churches in untapped areas of the capital region.
April 2015 was a very important phase for the ministry of IPC Delhi State. Pastor K. Joy who had served as President of IPC-NCR and Delhi State for a continuous period of almost 22 years, felt the divine guidance from God to give up his administrative responsibility to spend more time in the ministry of Prayer and Word. He continues to serve the Lord as the Patron of IPC Delhi State and as a General Minister. The mantle of IPC Delhi State was handed over to Pastor Samuel M Thomas who was unanimously elected as President in the General Body meeting of IPC Delhi State held in April 2015, and approved by IPC General Council. Under his leadership, IPC DS focusses its work on the National Capital Region and has been making fervent efforts to reach the countless number of unreached people in Delhi and nearby areas.
The ministry is thankful to all well-wishes who have rendered their time and resources in various capacities and on numerous occasions to uphold and propel the gospel and its evangelization through IPC Delhi State. We solicit everyone’s support, either in kind or through financial aids to help the cause of mobilizing the Word of God to save the condemned, freeing those who are in bondage of sin and especially from the clutches of the devil, healing the sick, spreading the love of Jesus and winning souls to heaven.
